Chiropractic Care vs. Rest, Stretching, Massage, or Pain Medication: When Should You Book an Assessment?

Dr Brad Pritchard • August 7, 2026

When back pain, neck stiffness or another musculoskeletal issue starts bothering you, it is normal to wonder whether you should rest, stretch, book a massage, take pain medication or see a chiropractor. The answer depends on what caused the problem, how severe the symptoms are and whether they are improving.

At Oak Bay Family Chiropractic Centre in SW Calgary, we do not assume every ache needs chiropractic treatment. Your first visit begins with an assessment to understand what is contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic care is appropriate.

When Rest and Home Care May Be Enough

Mild soreness after exercise, a long day at your desk or an unfamiliar activity may improve with a short period of modified activity, gentle movement and time. Complete bed rest is generally not the goal for uncomplicated back pain. Staying reasonably active, as tolerated, is often more helpful than avoiding movement altogether.

If your symptoms are mild, clearly connected to a temporary activity and steadily improving, monitoring them for a few days may be reasonable.

When Can Stretching Help?

Stretching can be useful when stiffness or muscle tightness is limiting comfortable movement. The key is that the stretch should feel controlled rather than sharp or painful. Stretching also does not explain why an issue keeps recurring.

If you repeatedly stretch the same area but the pain comes back, there may be other factors involved, such as joint movement, posture, hips, feet or daily movement habits. We discuss this further in our guide to back pain that keeps coming back.

Massage vs. Chiropractic Care

Massage therapy primarily focuses on muscles and other soft tissues. It can be helpful for muscular tension, soreness and relaxation. Chiropractic care places greater emphasis on assessing joint mobility, spinal function, and how the musculoskeletal system moves as a whole.

These approaches do not necessarily compete with each other. Depending on the problem, massage, chiropractic care, exercise or other healthcare services may be used together You can learn more about our approach to chiropractic care in SW Calgary page.

What About Pain Medication?

Over-the-counter pain medication can provide temporary relief for some people, but it does not determine what is causing the pain. Medication also is not appropriate for everyone, so follow the label and speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about whether a medication is safe for you.

If you repeatedly need medication just to get through normal activities, it may be worth having the underlying problem assessed rather than only managing the symptom.

When Should You Book a Chiropractic Assessment?

Consider an assessment when pain or stiffness:

  • Keeps returning
  • Is affecting work, sleep, exercise or normal activities
  • Is accompanied by reduced mobility
  • Started after an injury and is not improving as expected
  • Persists despite reasonable home care
  • Includes recurring back, neck or joint discomfort

At Oak Bay Family Chiropractic, an assessment may include your health history, posture, range of motion, joint function and other relevant movement patterns. Treatment is recommended only after we have a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to the problem. Our guide to what happens during your first chiropractic appointment explains the process in more detail.

When Should You Seek Medical Care Instead?

Some symptoms should not be treated as routine muscle or joint pain. Seek urgent medical attention if back or neck pain occurs with symptoms such as new or worsening weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to move a limb, severe pain after significant trauma, or certain systemic symptoms such as fever. These can indicate a condition that requires medical evaluation rather than routine chiropractic care.

The Right First Step Is Understanding the Problem

Rest, stretching, massage, medication and chiropractic care can each have a role. The important part is choosing an approach that matches what is actually happening. If discomfort is minor and improving, home care may be enough. If symptoms persist or interfere with your normal life, an assessment can help determine what should happen next.

At Oak Bay Family Chiropractic Centre, our Calgary chiropractors begin by assessing the problem before recommending care. If chiropractic treatment is appropriate, we can develop an approach based on your symptoms, goals and comfort level.
