Functional Neurology

After graduating from Palmer College of Chiropractic West, Dr. Brad visited a colleague in Albuquerque who was practicing a cutting-edge form of chiropractic care. This neurologically based technique was different than anything Dr. Brad had been exposed to while at college. He was amazed at the results the chiropractor’s patients were getting.

Dr. Brad was intrigued and began researching and taking classes in Functional Neurology. He has studied Functional Neurology for several years completing over 700 hours of course work and is now board-eligible with the American Board of Chiropractic Neurology.

Frequently Asked Functional Neurology Questions

  • How does functional neurology differ from traditional neurology?

Most people assume neurology is only about diagnosing diseases of the nervous system. Functional neurology, however, focuses on identifying subtle changes in brain and nervous system function that can affect movement, balance, or cognition, even before a formal disease is present. Instead of prescribing medication or surgery, chiropractors trained in functional neurology use exercises, sensory stimulation, and chiropractic adjustments to retrain brain pathways.

  • Can functional neurology help with symptoms that don’t show up on scans?

Yes. Many neurological symptoms, such as dizziness, brain fog, or poor coordination, don’t appear on MRIs or CT scans. Functional neurology emphasizes clinical testing and observation to detect functional imbalances in the nervous system. This approach helps create personalized rehabilitation plans even when standard imaging looks “normal.”

  • Why is individualization so important in functional neurology treatment?

The nervous system adapts differently for every person, so a “one-size-fits-all” approach rarely works. Functional neurology tailors therapy to your unique brain–body responses. For example, one patient’s dizziness may improve with eye–movement exercises, while another’s may respond to balance training. This personalized approach often makes progress where general therapies fall short.
